The problem with sequels - Sequels in Bollywood

The trend of sequels has always been there in Bollywood. Film makers see sequels as a safe way to make a hit film. Even if both films have nothing in common, makers gives the old name again with a number and call it a sequel.

So most of the times the sequel out grosses the original film at the box office, but the original stays to be the better movie. Sometimes the sequels look exactly the same that we wonder that they have released the same movie again. so lets have a look at some film franchises in Bollywood of recent times.

1. Krrish 3

Krrish 3 was the third installment in the Krrish franchise. The first film Koi mil gaya and the second installment Krrish gave Indian viewers something new where Koi mil gaya was one of the best told Sci-fi  movies in indian cinema and Krrish gave Bollywood its first superhero. I must say here the second installment not only did well at the box office also satisfied the critics. but when it comes to Krrish 3 its not the same thing. Krrish 3 turned out to be a Hollywood ripoff. The movie was a mix up of many superhero movies in Hollywood. Yes it kind of had an original story line by the way, but while watching the movie it reminds us about many superhero movies in Hollywood. for example the scene where Krrish sprays the antidote into the atmosphere with some rocket thing looked exactly the same as the climax of  The amazing spider man and the Manwars reminds us about X men. The film did gross around 200 crores at the box office but was not even close to the first two fims when compared.

2. Dhoom 3

Dhoom 3 is the third installment in the Dhoom franchise. So Dhoom was an unexpected hit at the box office in 2004, as people liked the unbeatable thief and the brilliant police officer the makers decided to add some star power as they brought in Hrithik Roshan (John Abraham was not much of a star at the time of Dhoom,  Dhoom turned out to be the turning point in John Abraham's career) in to the second installment. Dhoom 2 did really good at the box office grossing around 100 crores in 2006. the film was good but not better  its predecessor. Then came Dhoom 3 in 2013 with The Aamir Khan in the lead. (The role of the police officer was supposed to be the hero from the first film, but the thief had more star power that the thief became the hero by the time the franchise released its 3rd installment) The film was no good, it did make lots of money at the box office but the only reason i see for that is the Brand name Dhoom and because of Aamir Khan. The films plot is even similar to Hollywood flicks The prestige and Now you see me.

3. Murder 2 and Murder 3

All three films of the franchise were good. Its just that all three films had 3 different stories, the only connection between these three movies was the name and erotic scenes.

Murder 2

This movie was about a cop looking for some girls (sex workers) who went missing.
Even though Emraan Hashmi had worn an annoying wig in the film it did well at the box office.

 Mruder 3

the third installment to the franchise was an average film when compared to the first two installments of the franchise. Murder 3  had its own excitements and unexpected twists, but a weak climax and No Emraan Hashmi lead the film to be an average grosser.

The Murder franchise gave us 3 good movies to watch, this one of the franchises where all the installments turned out to be watchable.

4. Don 2

Don (2006) was the remake of 1978 blockbuster of the same name. Director Farhan Akhtar scored with the remake when he twisted the story a little bit at the climax leaving a hint for a sequel. Don was an awesome movie, with the brand name of the 1978 blockbuster and The Shahrukh Khan in the lead.

The second installment Don 2 (2011) was a really good movie, with a brilliant script. The film was one of the highest grossers of the year. The movie obviously did not match the first one, but it did come close. It is said to be one of the best sequels in bollywood. It did have some scenes inspired from Hollywood, but the twists and turns in the story compensated for that.

5. Dabangg 2

This is the kind of movie i mentioned earlier, the one witch looks exactly like its predecessor. Dabangg 2 was the directorial debut of producer turned director Arbaaz Khan. The movie looked exactly the same like its predecessor Dabangg. Dabangg 2 had all the elements that Dabangg had, An awesome villain, An item number with a products name included in the lyrics, a dance with people in police uniforms, shirtless Salman Khan etc. Dabangg 2 did gross around 200 crores at the box office but was no good.  Both the movies were made for hardcore Salman Khan fans. The first movie was enjoyable but the second installment turned out to be barely watchable as it was a mere repeatation of the first one.

So  this was some of the franchises if recent times in Bollywood. Like i said, most of the times we have seen that film makers screw up the sequels ( Bheja Fry 2, kamaal Dhamaal Malamaal, Once Upon A Time In Mumbai Dobara, Yamla Pagla Deewana 2 are some of the examples for screwed up sequels) and sometimes they give us good fims ( like Tanu Weds Manu, Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster, Gangs Of Wasseypur 2 etc).
Still even if the movie is bad, most of the sequels grosses good money on the shoulders of the predecessor.
